Literary Criticism: Print (Books)

Comprehensive guide to literary criticism resources.

About print materials

At NHS, literary criticism can be found in the Reference Room located on the lower level.  Resources are located in two collections:

REF - Reference collection- critical articles included in large collections that appear in multi-volume print resources.

LITCRIT - Collection of individual literary criticism titles that circulate overnight.

Tips:

  • Use the table of contents and/or the index to locate specific information
  • Note that many of these works include biographical information
  • Some works are also available as an eBook. Look foron the book.

NOTE - Shakespeare has his own Dewey Number  - 822.3

Library Catalog

When searching for individual literary criticism books, use the
author name or title of work and criticism for your keyword search. 
For example:
Twain and criticism
Of Mice and Men and criticism

Look for results with call numbers beginning LITCRIT.  

Gale reference sets

The Gale reference sets should be a first stop on any literary criticism research endeavor! These sets contain comprehensive, authoritative information and include references for further research.

HOW TO FIND AN AUTHOR OR WORK:

1. Use Gale Literary Index to search for your author or work.

  • Author search: results will show the Gale series and volume that contain an entry on your author, and individual works by your author with the specific volume and page number.
  • Title search: results will show the Gale series that contains a discussion on the work (volume and page number).

 

2. Cross reference your search results with the series and volumes we have in the library:
