This three-volume reference work contains two hundred biographies of American "heroes" defined as people who have contributed to the nation through their actions and by their example. The editors have taken great pains to draw from a broad spectrum. They include people mentioned in every history book, like George Washington and Benjamin Franklin, to lesser known achievers, such as Dolores Huerta and Eugene V Debs to contemporary sports heroes like Chris Evert and Muhammad Ali. Each biography lists vital statistics, followed by a brief review of the subject's early life, followed by an explanation of their contributions to America. An annotated reading list is included in each entry. While some may quibble about the choices, this is fairly well balanced according to gender, occupation, political views and ethnicity. Asian-Americans have been ignored, something that should be rectified in future editions. On the whole this is a good reference work for school libraries.
