Summer Reading 2025 Overview

 The Purpose of Summer Reading

The Newington High School summer reading initiative is designed to promote the enjoyment of reading and to help students find books they will love. Our aim is to celebrate summer reading as the enjoyable activity it is meant to be and encourage students to develop the habit of lifelong reading.  To that end, all NHS students are encouraged to read at least one book of their choice during the summer.

During the summer, NHS students are encouraged to:

  • Select and read a book(s) of your choice. Resources to assist  with book selection have been compiled by school media specialists and include teacher and public library recommendations, as well as links to a variety of lists, videos, author sites and more.
  • Prepare for learning activities by previewing possible discussion questions. Possible discussion questions are posted below.

Finding a Great Book

This page has several tools for locating titles that you may like.  Please use the links on this page to access a variety of book lists and videos to help you select a title that interests you.  As you look for a book, keep in mind that you may read fiction or nonfiction.  This includes books of poetry or short stories, narrative nonfiction, and informational texts.

Feel free to contact Mr. Hartley @ bhartley@npsct.org over the summer for book recommendations! I'm happy to help!

NOTE: Students taking some courses, including Advanced Placement (AP) classes have additional work assigned by their teachers.
